I need help with the "diffing individual files" training mission
  • elundste July 2014
    The "diffing individual files" training mission is the second part of the "Using diff and patch" mission. Here is the link.
    http://openhatch.org/missions/diffpatch/single_diff

    I followed the high level hint exactly, but when I typed:
    diff -u original nutty-pancake.txt

    I just got:
    diff: original: No such file or directory

    Then when I typed:
    diff -u original new > output.txt

    I just got:
    diff: original: No such file or directory
    diff: new: No such file or directory

    Any help would be appreciated.

    I had the same errors. I found the problem started farther up on the second file copy where it said "Remote filename has no length!" You'll miss it if you aren't looking carefully as it still prints out normal looking data for the file copy even though it errored out.

    What I did was switched the file copy command parameters around and used a lowercase -o for the option (this page has more info on curl http://www.thegeekstuff.com/2012/04/curl-examples/). So the command became:

    $ curl -o original http://openhatch.org/missions/diffpatch/diffsingle/nutty-pancake.txt

    Then I changed the diff command to print out to a new output file to this instead of what was written in the mission:

    $ diff -u original nutty-pancake.txt > output.txt

    I also took someone else's advice from the forum and opened output.txt in Notepad++ to copy the text instead of Notepad to do the copy because Notepad removes some whitespace.
